Circles Book Three

Through ten wonderful years Griff Diamond and Clint Bishop weathered good times and bad together. Lately they haven’t spent as much time together as they’d like, and their physical relationship is suffering. Then Clint loses his job at the steel mill. Instead of worrying, he sees it as an opportunity to lean on his steady partner, start his writing career, and rekindle the passion they’ve lost.

But a friendly relationship with another author turns to obsession, putting Clint’s life in danger. Taken against his will to the Jewel Cave system in South Dakota, Clint must rely on the skills he’s learned from Griff to survive.

Fearing the worst, Griff tracks Clint across the country. As a US Marshal, Griff’s always been the man who keeps everyone safe, but he doesn’t know how he and Clint will survive this.

Oh, wow...I just loved this book! A very solid, long-term couple, deeply in love but getting just a little bit distant due to very busy schedules and very different lines of work. But the core of their relationship is still obviously still warm and solid. Although there are warning signs that a former writing group friend has crossed the line into obsessed stalker, Clint doesn't want to admit there is a problem b/c he does not want his U.S. Marshall partner to overreact. By the time Clint, and everyone else, takes the threat seriously, it's too late. I don't want to spoil the rest of the story for you, but suffice it to say that things get rather scary for Clint and Griff but with a silver lining at the end of the story. Great descriptions of scenes and of caving, nicely fleshing out this already vibrant story. Get it, read it! Now!

'Griff couldn’t believe Clint was ignoring him; that wasn’t his style. They’d argued plenty of times over the years, and Clint had never acted like this.'

What surprised me most about this book is just how gentle it actually is despite the premise set out in the blurb. The story features eco-thriller writer Cliff Bishop and his husband of ten years, Griff Diamond a US Marshal.

Writing as Bishop Gryven, Clint has a small on-line network of friends and fellow writers that he shares ideas and research with. Clint begins to suspect (against his own better judgement), something is more amiss with fellow writer Dylan than an inappropriate crush.

Dylan appears to know much more about Clint than he is comfortable with. Clint has done his best to rationalize what has been going on, and knows if he tell his husband, Griff is likely to over-react due to the nature of his job.

Exploring themes of safety, risk and attraction, much of the story deals with how much anyone can really know about their significant other. What draws you to someone, the personal insights and things you already 'know' about them and those things left unsaid. I particularly liked the exploration of these two very different men, their perspective on their long-term relationship and its ups and downs.

Griff and Clint's love and affection for one and other is undiminished, and yet hindsight in the face of trauma helps them realise that complacency has slipped into their life. The every day interaction and day-to-day distractions allow small hurts and frustrations take their toll. Then, a life changing event forces them to re-evaluate priorities and face the real possibility that they might not have an opportunity to rectify their mistakes.

The story falls into three parts, telling both Clint and Griff's perspectives, as they cope with the before, during and aftermath of Dylan's unhealthy attraction to Clint.

Personally I connected most with the before and after depicting their life together with their much loved dogs Phoenix and Fern.

It's not quite what I was hoping for, Jewel Cave didn't grip me or have me on the edge of my seat, I was anticipating 'a thriller' - something more intense. I was not bargaining on the nuanced domestic drama, skilfully evoking a curiosity about what happens next.

I first came across Elizabeth Noble's Sentries series which I love dearly. This is a very different kind of read from those six books (for one thing, it's contemporary and not AU, and there is very little detail about the more physical aspects of a long-term relationship.

Jewel Cave is the third book in the Circles series. It works well as a standalone novel. I speak from experience having not yet read either of the other Circles books yet.

Recommended for those who like nuance, flair and mystery and for whom the draw of an emotional connection is sufficient to keep their interests rather than lure of graphic details of a more physical relationship.

3.5 of 5 stars -
I’m a fan of gay romance, especially if it’s layered with something extra, in this case a suspenseful kidnapping, rescue and recovery. The two aspects were blended well, with Elizabeth Noble using the kidnapping to shine a light on the relationship, in a way that made me think about my marriage and what would I do and think about our relationship if something happened to my husband.

Noble’s style was easy to read and nicely paced and plotted to get everything in as a novella. And I was pleased that she wrote it so that even though this was the third book in a series, it worked well as a standalone, like how I read it.

I particularly liked that Noble started with the relationship at an established, mature 10 years. She captured well the normalcy of it, two everyday guys in a typical kind of long-term relationship that’s now in its “boring” stage. This was depicted effectively through the alternating povs of Clint and Griff (although there were times when the shift was a little too jolting). And it was perfectly fine that this had a low heat level (except for a final, just okay scene at the end), because it was more about the emotional relationship.

I also liked a number of the situational things. Their professions - a writer and Dep. U.S. Marshall - made it interesting. It was nice that they lived in Ohio, since I lived there, but I was disappointed it wasn’t really pictured. But the caves and spelunking were intriguing and made up for it.

The couple’s characters and relationship were well developed - realistic and human. However, Dylan as a villain was pretty stereotypical and not treated with much depth or nuance. That goes for the suspense, too, but I still enjoyed it. To be sure, this is more about the relationship than a thriller, and more a suspense than a mystery, because I knew about Dylan from the start. The tension was in how it would unfold. And even though that played out as expected and at times a little too conveniently, it was still told well enough to make it suspenseful.

What I didn’t expect though, a pleasant surprise, was that it didn’t end where I thought it would. Instead, there was a recovery process where the couple had to realistically deal with the aftermath, in terms of themselves personally and the relationship. While it was not necessarily how it happens, the thought was there and was a nice way to cap off an enjoyable read.
